Football legend Matt Le Tissier turns up at PROM to help schoolboy beat bullies

Kids at Ben Shaw’s school didn’t believe he was coached by the former England striker – until he turned up with Ben

Football legend Matt Le Tissier turned up at fan Ben Shaw’s school prom – to prove to bullies he coaches him.

Goalkeeper Ben, 11, from Southampton, Hants, has been attending Matt Le Tissier Natural Coaching Academy for four years but school pals told him he was lying.

But he got the last laugh when Le Tissier, nicknamed Le God by Southampton fans, drove him to his leavers do at Oakwood Primary School.

Ben’s mum, Claire Shaw, 42, said: “It was amazing, Ben has had a hard time at school, they were taking the mick out of him saying he doesn’t go to the MLT academy.

“We wanted to do something special for his prom and Ben was completely shocked, it was lovely.

“I was hopeful Matt would say yes because he is a lovely guy, but it was a shot in the dark. But then I went into the academy and they said he would love to do it.”

Le Tissier, who is now a Sky Sports pundit, made 540 appearances for Southampton, and played eight times for England, over a 16-year career.

Ben said: “I was really excited and surprised, it was really good and all my friends were really impressed.

“They wanted to know how I did it. The prom was very good, but my favourite bit was the ride with Matt.”
