AFC Barwell involved in International Sporting Ethics Project Leicestershire Grassroots Football Club AFC Barwell have been chosen to take part in a European Union Funded Project surrounding ethics in sport.
The project group consisting of grassroots sports clubs from Spain, Italy, Germany , AFC Barwell from the UK as well as academics from the University of Leicester and University of Rennes in France got together in January just out side of Barcelona to kick off the 2 year project which aims to tackle, amongst other areas, issues of fairness and discrimination in sport.
Michael Sumner of AFC Barwell said:
“It’s fantastic to be part of this project and to be able to contribute. As an FA Charter Standard Community Football Club we place great importance on fairness and inclusion and it’s great that we can have a positive input. We are looking forward to the next couple of years”
AFC Barwell hosts around 300 local children from varying social backgrounds who play football within the club from the ages of 3 to 18 years old. The club is constantly striving to improve standards in grassroots football both on and off the field of play. The project group will be meeting again in northern Italy in June.
Darren Finney from the club said:
“We are very proud to have been selected to work on this project. We hope to learn from our European partners, but we also think that we have established good boundaries and ideals at AFC Barwell, so learning is likely to be a two-way process. We hope it will have a very positive impact on local football in Leicestershire and beyond.”
