England’s worst ever performance at a World Cup inevitably provoked a critical aftershock of what went wrong and how to ensure the team’s future success. We need a scapegoat, could it be the players? No we’re not allowed to blame them, maybe it was the army of grassroots volunteers who nurtured the players as children?

As well as the performances of the current crop of players and manager, it’s worth also considering the next generation of English football – the grassroots of youth development.

Again Grassroots have created a new crop, Vardy, sterling, Kane, stones. If they do well we will credit the premier league, the governing bodies, however if they perform poor who can we blame, let’s blame grassroots again, yes it must be their fault.

The Premier League maybe? its huge success as a global product having squeezed the chances of young English players – is only getting worse. In the season 2012/13, 32% of Premier League players were English. A year later, less than a quarter of those playing for the top four were qualified to play for England.

Other European countries now see the England team as wholly subservient to the premier league, where Champions League qualification and deal-making prevails over coaching.

Where the development and nurturing of talent is second to instant success, could this be were the issue arises, no we’re not aloud to blame the premier league because it’s Grassroots fault.
